A deep dive into Google Analytics

This is week four of my month long project, where I focus on optimizing the marketing efforts of an Esports organization. This week I focused on data analysis as well gathering data from what I learned about the emails I created last week, so if you missed last week’s post, make sure to check it out here.

What I accomplished this week

This week I focused on two things. The first was to send out sponsorship emails to my leads. The second was to take a dive into one of the coolest tech tools available, Google Analytics.

So far I have sent out emails to half of my leads. I’m still waiting for responses, so I may adjust a few things in my email before I send out the other half.

I spent most of the week learning how to use Google Analytics. Whether it be social media impressions or the average session duration for a blog, understanding how to track metrics is a valuable tool for anyone to have.

I decided that while I was at it, I might as well take the assessments at the end and get the certificate of completion. I found that taking the assessments was a really helpful way to help me understand the information

I then took what I learned from the Google Analytics courses and injected an analytics tracking code onto my organization’s website so that we can begin to get a better understanding of our audience.

What I learned this week

As far as my email campaign regarding sponsorships goes, I’ve learned that it takes a lot of patience to achieve the results I want. It might take more than a week to receive responses from some of the companies I reached out to. However, the lack of responses might be a signal that I need to hit the drawing board again and design new emails. After I design new emails, I’ll then conduct an A/B split test to find out what works best.

My journey into Google Analytics taught me that there is a whole lot to be learned when it comes to data analytics. However, I’ve found that with just a little bit of research and patience I was able to learn some key features that Google Analytics has to offer.

In the course of a week, I learned how to inject a Google tracking code onto the website, filter data by using dimensions, create custom segments, and generate custom reports. I also learned which metrics are best for our organization to track. For now, Team DVS wants to focus on expanding on their audience. Here is an example of a basic audience report that I generated.

By looking at these reports, I’m able to see that over the course of just a week, we’ve had a growth in users. I am also able to see where users are coming from, as well as what device is used most when visiting our website. This is helpful information for us to know so that we can get a better understanding of viewers.

I’ve found that Google Analytics is one of the best ways to track metrics, for both small and large businesses. Having this much information about your audience is key to providing them with what they want and need the most.

My final thoughts

My first thought is that I need to continue educating myself on Google Analytics. Google Analytics is such a powerful tool that I just can’t help but want to keep learning about it. Even though I’ve received my Google Analytics certificate, there is still a lot more to learn when it comes to the advanced features.

Even though I spent a month learning how to use these valuable tech tools, I know there is a whole lot more to learn. However, as this month comes to an end and I look at what my goal is from the beginning of the month, I would say I achieved that goal and successfully optimized the marketing efforts for Team DVS.

From designing a sponsorship pitch deck to data analysis, I established proper protocols, as well as educated the team on the essential tech tools so that they can continue this work even when I’m not available. I’m excited to spend continue exploring different tech tools and methods that could further sharpen my digital marketing skills, so stick around and see what digital marketing projects I get myself into next month.
